Privacy Policy

Last updated October 23, 2026

The short version: your notes stay on your Mac. We keep your email address, your plan and how many AI questions you've used. When you ask the AI something, the notes it needs pass through our server to our AI provider to write the answer, and we don't keep them. We never sell your information and we don't show ads.

DownNote is run by Davin Joseph Leggett ("we", "us"), doing business as DownNote. This policy explains what information the DownNote app and this website collect, why, and what you can do about it. Questions? Email hello@downnote.app.

Your notes

Your projects and pages are saved on your own Mac, not on our servers. We can't see them.

When you use an AI feature (asking a question, summarizing, or finding a page), the DownNote app sends your question and the notes needed to answer it to our server, which passes them to our AI provider, Anthropic, to write the answer. Our server doesn't store your notes or questions. Anthropic processes them under its commercial terms, which say it doesn't use this data to train its AI models, and keeps it only for a limited time for safety and abuse checks.

Documents you import (PDF, Word or text files) are read on your Mac and saved there as pages. They're only sent anywhere if you use an AI feature on them, as described above.

What we collect

We don't use advertising trackers, and this website doesn't use cookies for tracking.

Who helps us run DownNote

We use a small number of service providers, who may only use your information to provide their service to us:

We don't sell or rent your personal information, and we don't share it for advertising. We may share information if the law requires it, or to protect DownNote or its users from fraud or abuse.

How long we keep it

We keep your account information while you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete your email, plan and usage records within 30 days, except records we must keep for tax or legal reasons, such as payment records. Notes on your Mac are yours to keep or delete.

Your choices and rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or the California Consumer Privacy Act. We'll honor those requests too.

Security

Connections to our servers are encrypted. Your sign-in is stored encrypted in your Mac's keychain. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information and will tell you promptly if a breach affects you.

Children

DownNote isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll update the date above and tell account holders by email or in the app before the change takes effect.
